Based in St Leonards, I began landscape painting in 1998 and my practice has been entirely 'en plein air' since 2002. This simply means that I paint all of my work on the spot, outdoors. I use Old Holland oil paints, and work on small gessoed boards. I travel by bus, train and on foot to reach the places that inspire me. And ferries when I'm in Scotland! I usually sit on the ground to paint, surrounded by my kit. I find it more comfortable, and warmer too. I usually complete a painting in one sitting. Sometimes I will work on one piece at the same location on multiple days, to achieve the level of detail that I want. Working quickly is helpful, as the light changes and I'm always chasing it. In coastal subjects, the tides produce their own challenges, as I rush to capture a disappearing beach or rocks. Working on a small scale makes everything more practical.
I have been showing and selling my work in numerous galleries since 1998, including the Royal Society of Marine Artists, and from 2005 to 2021 with the Royal Miniature Society at the Mall Galleries, London.
I am a member of the Rye Society of Artists and I have been exhibiting and selling my work since 1998. I won First Prize in the Rye Art Gallery 'En Plein Air' competition in 2024
